What to include in a bug report
- Your macOS version (Apple menu ▸ About This Mac).
- Your Sorting Room version (Sorting Room ▸ About Sorting Room).
- The drive format, if the problem happened while offloading (APFS, exFAT or Mac OS Extended).
- The steps that led to the problem, and what you expected to happen.
Buying, licenses and updates
Bought Sorting Room from this site? Your key, invoices and Macs are in the customer portal.
How much does it cost?
Try it free for 7 days, with every feature and no card needed. Then it’s $19 once: every feature on 2 Macs, with 1 year of updates, and you keep the version you have forever. Another year of updates costs $15, and nothing renews automatically. See what’s included.
What happens when the trial ends?
Sorting, trashing and starting new offloads pause until you buy. Undo, Restore and the moves log always keep working, so nothing is ever locked away: every file stays where it is, and you can still put back anything Sorting Room moved.
I lost my license key.
You don’t need it. In Sorting Room, click the trial tag or choose Sorting Room ▸ Buy Sorting Room…, then Already bought it? ▸ Email me a code, and sign in with the email you bought with. The key is also in the customer portal, along with your invoices. Polar emails it after you buy, so check your spam folder too.
How do I move Sorting Room to a new Mac?
On the old Mac, choose Settings ▸ License ▸ Deactivate This Mac. Then download Sorting Room on the new Mac and activate it. If the old Mac is gone, free it up in the customer portal, where each Mac is listed by its computer name.
It says “This key is already on 2 Macs”.
A license works on 2 Macs at a time. Deactivate one of them in Settings ▸ License ▸ Deactivate This Mac, or remove it in the customer portal, then try again.
What happens when my year of updates ends?
Nothing stops working. You keep the version you have, with every feature, for as long as you like. Updates released after your year need a $15 renewal. Until then Sorting Room won’t install them, and it tells you why.
How do I renew?
In Sorting Room, choose Settings ▸ Updates ▸ Renew, or buy another year of updates for $15 here. It’s a single payment and doesn’t renew automatically.
Can I get a refund?
Payments are handled by Polar, the merchant of record, which also sends your receipt and invoice. Within 14 days of buying, write to the developer for a full refund, no questions asked. The key stops working once refunded.
Using Sorting Room
Does Sorting Room rename my files?
No, never. If a file with the same name is already in the folder, you choose: Skip, Replace (the old copy goes to the Trash), or Put in _conflicts.
Will files placed in After Effects, Premiere or InDesign stay linked?
Not automatically. Sorting Room keeps each filename, but moving a file changes its path, so an app that has already placed the file may report it missing until you relink it. Because the name hasn’t changed, relinking is usually a matter of pointing the app at the new folder. Filing downloads before you place them in a project avoids relinking altogether.
Can I undo?
Yes. Command Z undoes any action during your session, including Trash, Replace, Skip and Offload. Undo history ends when you quit the app.
Why does macOS ask for access to my Downloads or Desktop?
Sorting Room only reaches the folders you add and the drives you choose, and it never looks anywhere else. It isn’t sandboxed, so the first time it opens Downloads, Desktop or Documents, macOS asks for its usual permission. You can change that later in System Settings ▸ Privacy & Security ▸ Files & Folders.
Is offloading safe?
Each file is copied, checksum-verified (SHA-256) on the drive, and only then removed from your Mac. If you prefer, originals can go to the Trash instead. During the same session, Command Z brings the project back.
Which drives work?
Any external or network volume you can write to. Sorting Room has been tested with APFS, exFAT and Mac OS Extended (HFS+) drives. Drives are recognised by their identity, not their name, so a different drive with the same name never receives your files.
Does it sort automatically in the background?
No. It suggests, and you decide with a keystroke, so nothing moves that you didn't see. The menu bar icon tells you when new files arrive.
Does it collect data or upload my files?
No. There are no analytics, advertising or tracking, and your files never leave your Mac except to folders and drives you choose, which can include an external or network drive for Offload. Your file names, move history and learned suggestions stay on your Mac. The version from this site checks its license with Polar, sending the key and a hashed ID for your Mac, and looks for updates on this site. See the privacy policy.
What do I need?
A Mac with Apple Silicon or an Intel processor running macOS 14 (Sonoma) or later. Liquid Glass is available on macOS 26; earlier versions use compatible visuals.
Can I sort folders other than Downloads?
Yes. Downloads, Desktop, or any folder you choose.
How do I see the welcome tour again?
Choose Help ▸ Welcome Tour. It lets you practise on pretend files, so nothing on disk moves.
Sorting Room collects no analytics and never uploads your files. Read the privacy policy.
