No analytics. No tracking. Your files are processed on your Mac and go only where you send them.
The short version: Sorting Room has no analytics and no tracking. It processes your files on your Mac, moves them only to folders and drives you choose, and everything it knows about them stays on your Mac. The app connects to the internet only to check its license with Polar and to look for updates on this site, as described below.
What we collect
Nothing about you or your files. Sorting Room has no analytics, no advertising, no tracking and no crash reporting of its own, and it never sends your files, file names or move history to the developer or to any third party.
Sorting Room connects to two places, only to check its license and to look for updates. The next section lists exactly what they receive.
License and update checks
License checks with Polar
Polar (api.polar.sh) issues and checks license keys. When you activate Sorting Room, and about once a week after that, the app sends Polar:
- Your license key.
- Your Mac’s computer name, so you can recognise your Macs in Polar’s customer portal.
- A salted SHA-256 hash of your Mac’s hardware ID, so a license can count its Macs. The hardware ID itself is never sent.
- Your email address, only when you sign in with it to unlock the app (Email me a code).
Sorting Room keeps working offline: it needs to reach Polar at least once every 30 days.
Payments
Purchases are made through Polar, the merchant of record, which handles payment, tax and invoices under Polar’s privacy policy. Your card details go to Polar and its payment processor, never to the developer. For each order, the developer receives your name, email address and country.
Update checks
About once a day, the app downloads its update feed, getsortingroom.com/updates/appcast.xml, from this site. Like any download, the request includes standard data such as your IP address and a user agent with the app’s version. System profiling is off, so no details about your Mac are sent. You can turn update checks off in Settings ▸ Updates.
Folders
Sorting Room isn’t sandboxed, so macOS asks for its usual permission before the app opens folders such as Downloads, Desktop or Documents. It still touches only the folders you add and the drives you choose.
What stays on your Mac
To do its job, Sorting Room keeps a few things locally on your Mac:
- The folders you choose, so you don’t have to choose them again.
- Your projects: their folders and roles.
- A log of moves, used for undo and history.
- Learned suggestions, based on the website a file was downloaded from and the words in file names.
- Your license, kept in your Mac’s Keychain.
None of this is sent anywhere, apart from the license details listed above. Deleting the app and its data removes it.
File contents
Sorting Room reads file contents only on your Mac, to detect exact duplicates and to verify copies with checksums. It never uploads file contents to the developer or to any online service.
Folders and drives
Sorting Room reaches only the folders you add. It writes to a drive only when you choose that drive as an offload destination. That can be an external drive or a network volume, such as a NAS or file server. Offloaded files are then stored on that drive, where its own security and backup arrangements apply.
This website
This site sets no cookies and uses no analytics, advertising or third-party trackers. It loads no external scripts or fonts. It is hosted on Cloudflare Pages, which processes standard request data, such as IP addresses, to deliver the site and protect it from abuse. The same applies to downloads and update checks. The Buy buttons take you to Polar’s checkout.
Children
Sorting Room collects no personal information from anyone, including children. Buying Sorting Room requires the details Polar needs for the order.
Changes to this policy
If this policy changes, the new version will be posted here with a new effective date. If Sorting Room ever starts collecting more data, this page will say so before the change ships.
